Join me on my road to fitness, with my health and fitness blog.

Welcome to the world of Strenua, the goddess of strength and endurance. Through this site I hope to investigate training, diets, treatments and science, exploring my own road to regain my fitness, health, strength and endurance. I hope to report back to you all through this site as I discover new ways to be motivated in my training, improve my performances and speed my recovery whilst reducing my temptation to succumb to chocolate and ice cream.

I have loved sport all my life. I have a degree in Sports Science and Physiology along with a PhD in Respiratory Medicine and I have taught a variety of watersports from kayaking and canoeing to whitewater rafting and swimming for 13 years.

On the land I love running, especially marathons. Unfortunately in November last year following the New York marathon where I ran sub 3:45, I injured my knee. Its taken about 6 months to recover but now the muscles in my right leg are weak and need strengthening. The other problem is I didn’t do a good job altering my diet when my exercise levels went down and I have put around 10lbs on over the last 6 months. At 5 foot 2 inches and 136 pounds my BMI of 24.9 is very close to the top end of healthy.

Apparently each pound gained is an extra 5 seconds over a mile, doesn’t sound like much but 10 pounds over a marathon is almost 22 minutes, without taking into account my reduction in athletic fitness. I’ll be lucky to run my next marathon under 4 hours at this rate.

So I am writing this, finishing off the last of my ice cream that can tempt me, knowing that tomorrow will be my first day back on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

Hope you will join me.
