Christmas gifts don’t have to be unimaginative books, CDs or socks.

Everyday we’ll suggest original stocking fillers for the active person in your life.

Today Charitable Gifts

Christmas is a traditional time for giving. But why not give to a charity at the same time by buying their charity Christmas cards and gifts.

Better still give to someone you don’t know, who’s life you could save with your gift. Give on behalf of yourself or on behalf of your office at work, or someone who would appreciate a donation being given on their behalf instead of receiving a personal gift this year.

Below are three charities who would welcome you support this Christmas.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to cancer research.

In 2007/08 we spent £333 million on cancer research projects, and a further £11m million on cancer information and advocacy. We fund the work of more than 4,500 scientists, doctors and nurses, all working together to beat cancer.

Our research receives virtually no government funding and our supporters are crucial if we are to continue to make real progress against this disease. Regular donations from as little as £2 per month provide us with the stability of longer term funding which enables us to plan ahead.

Our vision of beating cancer is as the heart of everything we do. As a charity we have four main purpose statements that explain how we intend to achieve our vision:

  • Carry out world-class research to improve our understanding of cancer and find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer.
  • Ensure that our findings are used to improve the lives of all cancer patients.
  • Help people to understand cancer, the progress we are making and the choices each person can make.
  • Work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against cancer.

Cancer Research UK have some great products available in their Online Shop – whether you are looking for cards and decorations for the home, gifts for him, her or the kids, or something to treat yourself with, Cancer Research UK have suberb quality products and competitive prices – and you can be sure that 100% of the profits go straight to lifesaving research.

Present Aid

Present Aid has over 40 fun and unusual gift ideas that will be loved by everybody and also help poor communities around the world. Christian Aid is an international development charity working in over 50 countries to help people in the fight against poverty.

Whether it is something sporty for a super fit granddad, a new bike for the green member of the family or an unusual pet for the kids, Present Aid is sure to have the perfect gift. And, not only will it be their loved one who benefits, a Present Aid gift will also help to make a lasting difference to someone else’s life.

How does it work?
For each present that is ordered we send a gift card that is then given to a friend or family member. Each card describes how Christian Aid helps people in the developing world improve their own lives, and has a space to include a personalised message.

Where does the money go?
The gifts on sale are virtual. This means that whatever present bought, the money will go directly to a project fund relevant to the gift. For instance, if you buy a goat, ducks or even composting worms, that money goes directly to our agricultural and livestock fund. We have six of these project funds;

  • Agriculture and livestock
  • Emergency and disaster preparedness
  • Healthcare including HIV/Aids
  • Power & energy
  • Training and education
  • Water and environment

Save The Children

We’re the world’s independent children’s charity. We’re outraged that millions of children are still denied proper healthcare, food, education and protection. We’re working flat out to get every child their rights and we’re determined to make further, faster changes. We’re working flat-out to right the fundamental wrongs that affect children.

Too many children are still dying because they haven’t got enough food or because they can’t get treatment for simple illnesses. Millions aren’t getting an education and are being exploited and abused. This is not good enough, and Save the Children are committed to doing something about it.

Wish List is our range of virtual gifts, that directly benefit children. When a customer buys a gift from Wish List, we give that actual gift to a child and their family in one of the poorest places in the UK or around the world. The customer receives a greetings card of their choice and a Wish Certificate inside explaining how their gift will directly benefit children – they then give this as a gift to a friend or relative. Our promise to spend the customers’ money on the item that they have bought is very important to us, and is a key differentiator to other charity virtual gift ranges.

The selection of gifts we sell all directly benefit children specifically – and we sell all sorts of things from footballs to family food baskets, bicycles to baby kits, shoes to school desks! Prices range from £7 to over £500, and there are loads of gifts priced perfectly for Christmas presents. Wish List gifts are great Christmas ideas for people who are difficult to buy for, or for those people that are always very thoughtful about others – there is something for everyone.
